Batteries and Fuel Cells
Within the framework of the many technological changes that have taken place in the last ten or so years, we have seen major developments such as the miniaturization of electrical and electronic devices such as laptop computers, pagers, cell phones, consumer electronics etc. Their ease of portability has created a major demand for small rechargeable batteries for operating the devices. In addition, environmental pressures and potential supply constraints on fossil fuels have spurred major R&D programs that now favor
Fuel Cells to replace gasoline for transportation and provide electricity for residential and small businesses heat/hot water systems.
TCI has conducted many research studies on innovative batteries, for example zinc-air batteries. Zinc-air cells provide one of highest energy densities and energy storage capacities compared with other electrolytic materials such as lithium-ion, nickel-metal hydride, and nickel-cadmium.
With respect to fuel cells, TCI has helped clients in the following areas:
- Identified acquisition candidates for a major auto-industry supplier seeking a technology base.
- Identified R&D companies with technologies for high-temperature membranes for PEM systems that minimize catalyst poisoning effects from carbon monoxide.
- Evaluated the commercial prospects for a university-developed technology for DMFCs.
- Evaluated the viability of different catalysts and fuel processing systems for producing hydrogen for PEMFCs.
